122 Punjab politicians lose security cover day after Bhagwant Mann meets DGP

One day after Punjab Chief Minister Designate Bhagwant Mann met with DGP of Punjab Police VK Bhawra, Additional Director General of Police (Security) in a letter to SSPs and PCs across the state ordered the withdrawal of security from 122 politicians including former congressional ministers and deputies.

The list mainly includes names of senior Congress leaders from Punjab, who were granted security cover under the previous Congress government. The list also includes the names of congressional MPs who managed to win their seats this time too but would no longer be cabinet ministers.

Senior leaders, including former cabinet ministers and a former assembly speaker, are also on the list whose security is to be removed. Some of the names are Manpreet Singh Badal, Raj Kumar Verka, Bharat Bhushan Ashu, Randeep Singh Nabha, Former Vice President of Vidhan Sabha Ajaib Singh Bhatti, Former President of Vidhan Sabha Rana KP Singh, Razia Sultana, Pargat Singh, Amrinder Singh Raja Warring , Aruna Chaudhary, Rana Gurjeet Singh, Tript Rajinder Singh Bajwa, Sukhbinder Singh Sarkaria and others.

According to the list, the highest, 21 security personnel, was removed from the service of former Transport Minister Amrinder Singh Raja Warring. The former minister managed to retain his seat in Gidderbaha.

As many as 19 staff members have been removed from the security of former finance minister Manpreet Badal who lost the Bathinda Urban election. As many as 17 staff are expected to be removed from the safety of former education minister Pargat Singh, who won his seat Jalandhar Cantt.

Former food minister Bharat Bhushan Ashu, who lost from Ludhiana West, will lose 16 security personnel. Fifteen staff members each have been removed from the security of Sangat Singh Gilzian and Randeep Singh Nabha – two former cabinet ministers who lost recently concluded elections.

Fourteen security personnel were removed from former ministers Brahm Mohindra, Razia Sultana, Aruna Chaudhary, Rana Gurjeet Singh, Tript Rajinder Singh Bajwa and Sukhbinder Singh Sarkaria.

Mohindra did not contest this time and his son Mohit Mohindra contested in his place from rural Patiala but lost. Razia Sultana lost from Malerkotla while four others – Chaudhary, Rana Gurjeet, Bajwa and Sarkaria – won from their respective seats.

The list also includes the name of Navjot Kaur Sidhu, former MP and wife of the head of the Punjab Pradesh Congress committee, Navjot Singh Sidhu, and the order says seven staff will be removed from her security.

Ludhiana’s Bains brothers – Simarjeet Singh Bains and Balwinder Singh Bains – both lost their seats this time and will lose four staff members.

Adaish Partap Kairon of Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), son-in-law of former Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal, who lost the election to Patti, will lose three members of his security. Other senior SAD leaders include Surjit Singh Rakhra, Maheshinder Singh Grewal, Daljit Singh Cheema, Sikander Singh Maluka and Tota Singh. They will lose 1-5 security guards each.

The list also includes former AAP MPs – Jagtar Singh Hissowal, HS Phoolka, Nazar Singh Manshahia, Amarjit Singh Sandoa and Rupinder Kaur Ruby – who either did not contest this time or moved on to other parties. Each of them had three security guards each.

A staff member each including BJP leaders Manoranjan Kalia, Chunni Lal Bhagat, Tikshan Sood and former BJP leader Madan Mohan Mittal who joined SAD ahead of the elections will be removed from security.

Former Congressman Jasbir Singh Khangura of Ludhiana, who joined the AAP before the elections, will also lose a member of the security staff. Withdrawn police personnel will report immediately to their parent units, the order adds.
