DENVER (CBS4) – The Colorado Department of Transportation has reformed the way it lets people know what’s going on along state highways. This month, CDOT unveiled a revamped website and new mobile app to give as much real-time information to drivers as possible.

For the dozens of companies that specialize in getting tourists from the airport to mountain destinations, the updated technology is a welcome addition.

“Our dispatchers and operations managers monitor the website constantly,” said Jackie Roppel, owner of Summit Express, a Silverthorne-based transportation company. “Road conditions and travel alerts as well as cameras are the most important thing for our dispatchers. “

CDOT claims its core technology is behind COTrip.org was 18 years old. Newer software can better integrate cameras and even third-party technologies such as Waze Alerts into the state’s advanced traffic management system.

Summit Express, in winter, employs about 100 people and makes up to 30 van trips to Denver International Airport during peak travel season. When the snow begins to fall, dispatchers work hard to keep drivers informed so that guests can get to their destination.

“This allows us to contact our customers and make plans for snowstorms. Why are they stuck on I-70? Will it be a long or short delay? This is absolutely crucial for our business, ”said Roppel.

New state technology allows users to do more with data and has improved the way drivers can be informed of alerts along their route. Future improvements will include a plow tracker next month and in 2022 the app is expected to be able to provide step-by-step directions for anywhere in Colorado.
