Ravi Kumar Dahiya to vouch for gold at CWG 2022
Ravi Dahiya, Vinesh Phogat, Naveen Kumar and Bhavina Patel won gold medals for India while the nation racked up three silvers and seven bronzes for a total of 14 medals by day nine of the competition. So far, it has been the best day for India at the Commonwealth Games Birmingham 2022.
The wrestlers finish with 6 gold medals and a total of 12 medals
It was again the Indian wrestlers who were among the medalists and at the end of the wrestling competition, the Indian contingent finished with at least one medal for each wrestler. In fact, it became the best ever Indian wrestling game in the history of the Commonwealth Games. It ended with six gold medals, breaking the five gold medal mark created at Gold Coast 2018.
Ravi Dahiya, Vinesh Phogat and Naveen Kumar won gold in the Men’s 57kg, Women’s 53kg and Men’s 74kg categories respectively. Apart from them, three other wrestlers, Deepak Nehra, Pooja Gehlot and Pooja Sihag won bronze medals.
Indian women’s team win historic cricket medal
India’s women’s cricket team beat home favorites England in a thrilling final encounter to advance to the final and clinch India’s first-ever Commonwealth Games medal in its most popular sport . Chasing 165, set up by Indian eves, England women could only muster 160 in their 20 overs. Smriti Mandhana scored 50 from 23 while Sneh Rana defended 14 points in the final over. In the final, India will face Australia.
Historical medals in athletics
While in other sports India was always expected to succeed, but the silver medals won by Priyanka Goswami in the women’s 10km walk and Avinash Sable in the men’s 3000m steeplechase were incredible.
While it was the first ever silver medal in Race Walk for India, Sable broke the Kenyan stronghold by becoming the first non-Kenyan since 1998 to win a steeple chase medal. He also created a national record and clocked his personal best of 8:11:20 seconds.
Indian men’s hockey team in the final
The men’s hockey team didn’t let the jitters get to them as they beat South Africa 3-2 after conceding a last-minute goal to advance to the final. In the final they would face Australia who beat England 3-2 in another semi-final.
Another Lawn Bowls medal for India
India added another medal in the Lawn Bowls event as the men’s four-man team competed well against Northern Ireland and ultimately lost. However, it was the best lawn bowls campaign ever in India. After the women’s four-man team’s historic gold, this is the country’s second medal in the sport at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.
Four Indian boxers reach the final
Ahead of Sagar, Nitu Ghanghas, Nikhat Zareen and Amit Panghal qualified for the lead in their respective weight classes. Three Indians, Mohd Hussamuddin, Jaismine Lamboria and Rohit Tokas lost on a split decision and had to settle for the bronze medal.
Sharath Kamal heading to the final
Achanta Sharath Kamal had a phenomenal day on the table as he qualified for the finals in men’s doubles with Sathiyan Ganasekaran and mixed doubles with partner Sreeja Akula.
Kamal also won his singles match and also qualified for the men’s singles semi-final. Sreeja lost a riveting women’s singles semifinal in seven sets to the top seed. She will fight for a bronze medal. Sathiyan also reached the men’s singles semi-final.
