Heroic Security Guard Saves Residents During Kenneth City Apartment Fire


KENNETH CITY, Fla. (WFLA) – A two-alarm fire ripped through Ashford Bayside Apartments in Kenneth City on March 3.

Now, a new video shows the heroism of a security guard and residents of the apartment complex to save dozens of residents.

Just after 11:00 p.m. Wednesday night at the Ashford Bayside Apartments in Kenneth City, a resident shouts “FIRE”.

Security officer Corey Palmer was on patrol when he heard a resident shout “Fire” in the dramatic body camera video.

The resident yells that it’s on the third floor as Palmer smashes the glass of a fire extinguisher, tells the resident to call 911 as he rushes to the third floor.

Palmer attempted to put out the fire, but it was already too big for the small extinguisher and began to spread rapidly.

“Once I got to the third floor, I tried to put out the fire, but once I realized it was a bit too big for said fire extinguisher, I decided to keep getting people out of the room. building,” Palmer said.

He then rushed from door to door, knocking and shouting for people to come out. A resident jumps into his car as debris from the fire rains down and Palmer yells at the other residents to get out.

“Once I realized the fire was too big, I went to activate the fire alarm and after that, it didn’t matter which door I was running through, I just started knocking on doors,” Palmer said. .

Other residents help knock on the doors, and everyone manages to get out unharmed, thanks to Palmer and other fast-acting residents. Palmer is modest in his actions.

“I just did what I was trained to do. My biggest job was to observe, to report, to protect people’s lives and then property,” Palmer said.

Authorities said the Red Cross was assisting around 50 people displaced by the fire.
