Houston woman killed when Uber is hit by truck on Southwest Freeway

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) – A 39-year-old woman has died after the Uber she was riding in was hit from behind over the weekend.

The incident happened early on Saturday. Houston Police said Misty Holley was a passenger in a Mitsubishi Lancer when the vehicle began to have mechanical problems in a moving lane of traffic on the Southwest Freeway near Newcastle.

When stopped on the freeway, a truck slammed into the back of the car, killing Misty Holley.

Investigators said Misty Holley, who was in the backseat, died at the scene.

“It’s always a shock, but I feel like the first few days were a major shock and most of us are barely functioning,” said Ariel Holley, Misty’s sister.

Misty Holley’s family told ABC13 she worked as a security guard in the gated community of Point Aquarius on Lake Conroe.

“She had a little tenor ukulele and she would have it in the guardhouse with her. Cars and residents would pass and she would learn new songs and play it for the residents. She was a character for sure,” said his family at ABC13.

Police said the 50-year-old Uber driver was taken to hospital after the crash with broken ribs.

The 30-year-old driver of the truck that struck the rear of the sedan was uninjured and remained at the scene. He was not charged.

“She took all the necessary precautions. She took a ride in a vehicle she was not going to drive,” Misty Holley’s family told ABC13.

ABC13 contacted Uber who said they were working on a statement regarding the crash.
