Maureen Brinker has been named Services Midland Senior Volunteer of the Month for March.

Maureen, designated Visitor Friend, has been volunteering since February 2020, just before the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. And the pandemic hasn’t stopped her from continuing to volunteer.

“I have known Senior Services for more than 25 years and I admire what the agency does. Volunteering is a way for me to give back,” Brinker said. “Volunteering makes me feel better and allows me to make others feel good too.

Brinker typically visits a client weekly for a few hours at a time. They will talk, discuss current and past events and simply reminisce together. She recently agreed to visit another client. Brinker says, “I’ve developed some friendships that I don’t want to give up.”

Katie Vokal, Care Manager, says, “Volunteers like Maureen started out as social support, but because of her caring and compassionate demeanor, my clients now see her as a loving friend.

Many clients who are referred to the friendly visitor program are housebound. They also may not have reliable family or friends to watch over or socialize them.

Vokal expressed his appreciation for Brinker’s volunteerism saying, “Maureen has become a constant in the lives of my clients who are still worried and scared of living in this world dominated by COVID-19. She brings the home to life and provides updates to the care management team. Maureen makes sure my clients get the right support to stay where they want to be, safe in their own home. »

Friendly visitors/shoppers assist seniors who may be isolated, housebound or unable to drive. Depending on the client, a Visitor Friend can come to their home to visit or play cards, take them to a center for lunch, take a walk or simply go shopping once a week.

Sometimes people who need a customer can no longer drive or just can’t move well enough to shop on their own. Visits are tailored to the needs of the senior as well as the interests and availability of the volunteer. The time commitment is typically one to two hours per week and mileage is reimbursed. Being a visitor/buyer friendly is the only volunteer opportunity someone who is still working full time can do after hours or on weekends.

Brinker moved to Midland from the Detroit area about 47 years ago. She has two adult daughters who live nearby. Maureen worked for Visiting Nurses, which is how she learned about Senior Services. Maureen enjoys sewing, crafting, reading, cooking and baking in her free time.
