Popular Midlands tourist attraction goes up for sale

Commercial property adviser Christie & Co has been tasked with selling one of the Midlands’ biggest tourist attractions.

Last year, Birmingham developer St Modwen announced it wanted to get rid of the Trentham estate in Staffordshire after more than 30 years of ownership of the site, following a strategic review.

Now the Stone Road attraction – home to a shopping village, Italian gardens, lakeside promenade and watersports center plus Trentham Monkey Forest and Treetop Adventures – is officially on the market.

Over 3.25 million people visit the site each year, including over 760,000 paying visitors, making Trentham one of the top five paying attractions in the UK.

Christie & Co says the on-site management and operations teams from Trentham will transfer with the sale of the business to ensure “operational continuity” for the incoming buyer.

St Modwen’s CEO, Sarwjit Sambhi, said: “We are proud of the investment and commitment we have made to the Trentham Estate over many years, bringing the gardens back to life and creating a destination for very popular shopping and leisure area.

“Over the past few years St Modwen have focused on the key areas of home building and logistics property development and last year confirmed their intention to sell Trentham. We are now targeting an organization or individual who can continue to invest in the business and act as a steward to support its continued success.”

Jon Patrick, head of leisure and development at Christie & Co, oversees the sales process.

Jon said: “Trentham is a unique asset in that it combines a mix of very stable investment income, as well as garden and event income, whilst offering plenty of opportunities for further development.

“Having one of the busiest garden centers in the country, a vacancy rate of just 2% in the shopping village and an easily accessible location with 7.5 million people living within an hour’s drive, make Trentham one of the most exciting assignments we have worked on in recent years.

“We anticipate that the UK public’s growing interest in all things ‘out there’ as well as investors’ focus on long-term income opportunities with further potential for development and exposure to operational property, will see interest in Trentham come from a diverse group of buyers.

“Add this to the environmental and sustainable property credentials on offer and Trentham truly is a unique opportunity not to be missed.”
