Two BJP employees and their two personal security guards were arrested for allegedly faking a militant attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kupwara district last week, officials said on Tuesday. BJP workers Ishfaq Mir and Basharat Ahmad, as well as guards were arrested on Monday, they said.
BJP workers, in collusion with the guards, faked Friday night’s attack at Gulgam in Kupwara to boost security, officials said. Mir, son of BJP district president Mohammad Shafi Mir, was injured in the arm.
After a preliminary investigation, police said Mir was injured in an accidental shooting by a security guard. However, after sustained questioning, the defendants confessed that they rigged the attack to gain more security, officials said.
All were brought before a local court in Kupwara on Monday, which took them into custody for seven days. Meanwhile, the BJP suspended the district president and ordered an internal investigation.
BJP Kashmiri spokesman GM Mir has been asked to submit a report by July 25.
